Spring and fall outdoors in northern Minnesota are wonderful times. The weather is cool and there are no flies or mosquitos. Summer on the other hand in the north woods of Minnesota means black flies, mosquitos, deer and horse flies, and wood ticks. Insect repellent is a must, even when you are out on the lake. Have it with you when you go out. Check yourself and your pets for ticks often. Black flies will attack the underside of your pets if you let them go into the longer foliage. Insects aside, summer brings wild life out, so seeing animals, especially in the fall when the leaves start to drop and in the spring before the buds all explode is a great time for hiking, biking or ATVing.
